HMW combines editorial reporting with mapped public data. Story markers can be tied to cities, Hollywood-area neighborhoods, venues and addresses; a separate automatic crime-data layer pulls public incident records from LAPD, LASD and connected municipal feeds and maps them by coordinates and jurisdiction. HMW now labels location precision so agency-published coordinates are visually distinguished from block/intersection locations that HMW geocodes approximately. Other map information can come from editorially entered or derived location metadata. Maps are art here: geography becomes a visual archive of Hollywood and Los Angeles. Reported incidents are not findings of guilt, and agency data can be preliminary, delayed, corrected or geographically rounded.
Official feeds, refreshed automatically.
LAPD: City of Los Angeles NIBRS incident data. LASD: Sheriff-jurisdiction Part I & II crime points from Los Angeles County’s official ArcGIS layer, with LASD CSV as a fallback. Santa Monica PD: official geocoded police-incidents open data. Beverly Hills and Long Beach publish useful crime records, but HMW only draws incident points when an official source supplies real coordinates; otherwise those cities remain available through the separate annual-statistics layer. HMW refreshes configured point feeds twice daily and displays individual points and/or density heat maps.
For cities where a stable geocoded incident feed is not available, HMW can display a separate City annual stats layer from California DOJ OpenJustice Crimes and Clearances. Pasadena, Glendale, Burbank, Culver City, Torrance, Inglewood and other municipal agencies can appear in that annual layer. Annual agency totals are a different time window and measure from recent incident points and are not added together with the point/heat-map counts. Raw public-data markers remain visually separate from HMW editorial stories.
Hollywood Neighborhoods
Featured Los Angeles regionHMW definition: Hollywood is a featured region inside the City of Los Angeles, based broadly on the City of Los Angeles Hollywood Community Plan Area. “Hollywood Core” is used for the classic central Hollywood district. West Hollywood remains a separate incorporated city.
