RJ Mitte, the actor best known for playing Walter “Flynn” White Jr. on AMC’s Breaking Bad, has died at 34.

Mitte’s representatives confirmed his death on Monday, October 12, in Brownsville, Texas. A Cameron County official told news organizations that Mitte was pronounced dead that afternoon. His representative later told People that Mitte died by suicide. An official death investigation remained ongoing as initial reports were published.

A defining role on “Breaking Bad”

Mitte joined Breaking Bad as a teenager and played Walter White Jr., also known as Flynn, throughout the series. Like Mitte, the character had cerebral palsy, giving the role an unusual degree of lived authenticity at a time when disabled performers were still rarely cast in major television roles.

The series made Mitte widely recognizable, but he used that visibility for work beyond acting. He became a prominent advocate for disability representation and inclusion, speaking publicly about cerebral palsy, accessibility and the barriers disabled actors face in entertainment.

An advocate beyond Hollywood

Mitte worked with organizations including United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s and supported efforts aimed at expanding representation for people with disabilities. His representatives described him as an actor, philanthropist and disability-rights advocate.

He also appeared in projects including Switched at Birth, The Guardians of Justice and independent films, while continuing advocacy work alongside his acting career.

What is known about his death

Initial reports from CBS News, Reuters and the Associated Press confirmed Mitte’s death but said a cause had not yet been officially released. People subsequently reported that his representative confirmed he died by suicide. TMZ also reported that law enforcement said the death investigation remained open.

Hollywood Most Wanted is treating the representative’s statement and the official investigation as separate facts: the family representative has described the death as suicide, while the formal authorities’ process was still underway in early reporting.

Tributes from people who worked with Mitte began appearing soon after news of his death, remembering both his work on Breaking Bad and his impact as a disability advocate.
