In 1989, while living in Houston, Vicky Lynn Marshall—better known by her stage name of Anna Nicole Smith—was arrested by Houston police and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. At the time, she was living alone with her son, Daniel Wayne, and separated from her first husband, Billy Wayne, for two years.
It was during her time in Houston that Vicky Lynn’s career took off. Initially working in a Wal-Mart and waiting tables at a Red Lobster, she took a job as an exotic dancer at Rick’s Cabaret. Dancing under the names “Robin” and “Miss Nikki,” Vicky met oil billionaire Howard Marshall. In 1991, she began taking voice and modeling lessons. In October of 1991, she responded to an advertisement seeking models for Playboy magazine, and a star was born. In rapid succession she appeared on the cover of Playboy, as its centerfold, and as its Playmate of the Year in 1993. By this time she had settled on her stage name of Anna Nicole Smith.
Since Vicky Lynn Marshall had not achieved any measure of fame at the time of her arrest, there was no press or public reaction to it. In light of her later career as a model and reality TV star, and her well-publicized battles with substance abuse, her arrest has received some retrospective attention.
