Janis Joplin became controversial when she was arrested on November 15, 1969 after she yelled and insulted police officers in one of her concerts in Tampa. She allegedly threw bad words at the police officers in the middle of her concert which led to her arrest after her performance.
The charges against her were eventually dropped after the court ruled that it was just a freedom of expression at that the singer was just exercising her right to free speech. This incident did not derail the singer’s career and she was able to perform in some more concerts including her performance in Woodstock which sealed her identity as a legend in the music industry.
